NATPA /PVTTP Pulling Rules

Division I

Division I is designed for beginning pullers and show tractors. It is used to promote stock pulling.

Tractors: 1959 and older or production models that started in 1959.

Classes: 2500, 3000, 3500, 4000, 4500, 5000, 5500, 6000, 6500, 7000, 7500, 8000,8500, 9000, & 9500+

1. General Rules: see gerenal rules section that apply to all tractors.

2. Entry: A tractor cannot be entered in classes below its manufactured shipping weight. A Division I tractor may also pull in Division II if the tractor meets the rules for Division II. Division II tractors cannot pull in Division I.

3. Maximum Tire Size: 0-3500# 130 sq. in. max; 3501-4500# 145 sq.in max; 4501- 5500# 170 sq.in. max; 5501-6500# 229 sq.in. max; 6501-7500# 284 sq.in. max; 7501-8500# 300sq.in. max. No cut tires. See tire size chart below from Firestone Traction Field and Road and Firestone Field and Road Charts.

4. Rims and Wheels: Tractors must have OEM recommended diameter rims and OEM wheels. Tires must be on the rim width, not exceeding tire manufacturers recommended width. Wheels with rims for manufacturers original recommendations to include cut-downs for tractors that may have originally been on steel wheels.

5. Speed Limit: 2.75mph. Not allowed to shift torque or gear.

6. Weights: Weights of bolt on type to either front or the back wheels. Weights can be made. They must be round and made of metal and be as near as appearing to original manufactured weights as possible. No concrete or suitcase weights allowed.

7. Engine: Stock block, naturally aspirated. Exceptions: Oliver 99GM, etc. Stock head, manifold, and carburetor (by part number). Manifolds are to be replacement manufactured parts accepted for that make and model tractor. Stock RPM. Engine parts not in parts book or replacement parts book for that specific tractor cannot be used. Exceptions: Distributors can be used on Antique tractors. A factory coil must be used. No electronic ignitions, square coils, MSD coils or chrome coils allowed.

8. Hitches: Maximum 16" height (stationary in all directions) locked at 16" on tractors such as IH fast hitch, Ford 3 point hitch, etc. Hitches must be as from factory - unaltered for that specific tractor. Operator must furnish a straight up and down clevis with minimum opening of 3.5" bolted or pinned tightly with spacers to the draw bar. Hitch measured at hook point of clevis. Farmall H's & M's must pull from an original draw bar hooked to the belly hook point. Drawbar must be 24" minimum from center of axle to hitch point. (This wording added as per safety committee on 7/30/03)

9. Safety: The front wheels of the tractor are not allowed to exceed 16" off the ground during a pull. Wheelie bars are optional. If wheelie bars meeting upper division requirements are used, the above nose height rule does not apply.

10. Apperance: Tractors must mantain orginal stock apperance. If a part is not found in manufacturers' parts book it cannot be used. No extra accessories allowed. No aluminum or chrome allowed except for exhaust pipe. All guards, shrouds, covers and shields shall be in place from factory and be made of orginal material (steel or iron) and as near like factory as possible. No homemade rear end covers allowed. Seat must be orginal seat or manufactured seat made for farm tractor placed with stock mountings (such as TSC). Homemade side-shields will not be allowed. Alternators and straight pipes are allowed.

11. Sponsors: Advertising plaques or signs may be put on tractors as lomg as it does not interfere with teching of tractor.

2022 rule book

Division II

Division II is designed for competitive pullers with near stock tractors, pistons kits, etc.

Tractors 1959 and older or production models that started in 1959.

Exception: JD 30 Series allowed

Classes: 2500, 3000, 3500, 4000, 4500, 5000, 5500, 6000, 6500, 7000, 7500, 8000,8500,9000, & 9500+

1. General Rules: see general rules section that apply to all tractors.

2. ENTRY: A Division l tractor may also pull in Division II if the tractor meets the rules for Division II. Division II tractors cannot drop to Division l.

​

3. MAXIMUM TIRE SIZE

    0-4500# 170 sq. in. max

    4501-6500# 229 sq. in. max

    6501-8500# 300 sq. in. max

    No cut tires. See tire size chart below from Firestone Traction Field and Road and Firestone Field       and Road charts. Maximum tire size of 38".

4. RIMS AND WHEELS: Tires must be on rim width, not exceeding tire manufacturers recommended     width. Pressed steel wheels are allowed front and rear. No chrome or aluminum wheels allowed.

5. SPEED LIMIT: 3 MPH. Not allowed to shift torque or gear.

6. WEIGHTS: Suitcase weights and custom made weight brackets are permitted, front weight bracket and weights to extend no farther than 11 feet from center of rear axle. Weights may not extend behind rear tires. A stop on the ends of the weight brackets no closer than 4" to the rear wheel (not the rim).

7. ENGINE: Stock block, naturally aspirated. Exceptions: Oliver 99 GM, etc. Stock head, manifold, and carburetor (by part number). If an external part is not in the parts book or replacement parts book for that specific tractor it cannot be used. Exception: straight exhaust pipe allowed, air filter must be used although it may be of any type. RPM - 110% of factory high idle specification (RPM used is the latest model rpm for that make of tractor). No electronic ignitions, (Exception: an electronic pickup inside the original stock distributor or magneto can be used, but distributor or magneto must maintain original appearance). No square coils, MSD coils or chrome coils allowed.

8. HITCHES: Minimum 18" back from the center of the rear axle and a maximum of 18" drawbar height. Hitch material cannot be thinner than 3/4" and not thicker than 1.25". Hitch has to have a 3" hole with 1" material thickness around the hole or a straight clevis bolted or pinned tightly to the drawbar with a minimum of 2.5" hole. Top of hitch adjuster cannot be above center line of axle or hub. Hitches and drawbars must be stationary in all directions. Hitch must be easily accessible (sled operator's discretion).

9. APPEARANCE: Tractors must maintain original stock appearance. If a part is not found in the manufacturers’ parts book it cannot be used. No extra accessories allowed with the exception of weight brackets, hang-on weights, wheelie bars, wheels, rims, bolt on hubs, draw bar, muffler and air cleaner. Battery boxes may be moved from stock mounting location. No aluminum allowed except for weight brackets and wheelie bars. No chrome allowed except for exhaust pipes. Homemade side-shields are not allowed. Exception: factory side-shields such as on Olivers. No homemade rear end covers allowed. All guards, shrouds, covers, and shields shall be in place as from the factory and be made of original material (steel or iron) and as near like factory as possible. Seat must be an original seat or a manufactured seat made for a farm tractor placed with stock mountings (such as TSC). Alternators and straight pipes are allowed.

10. SPONSORS: Advertising plaques may be put on tractor as long as it does not interfere with teching of tractor.

Divison IITC

Division IITC NATPA Pulling Rules

Effective until 4/2019
 
Tractors 1959 and older or production models that started in 1959
Classes: 2500, 3000, 3500, 4000, 4500, 5000, 5500, 6000, 6500, 7500 8500, and 9500#
 
 
1. GENERAL RULES – See general rules that apply to all tractors.  
 
2. AGE: Drivers must be 14 years of age or older. Those under 18 years of age must have written parental/guardian permission.  
 
3. SAFETY: All tractors must have a working safety kill switch.
 
4. DRAW BAR/HITCH: Minimum 18” back from the center of the rear axle and a maximum of 18” drawbar height. Hitch material cannot be thinner than ¾” and not thicker than 1.25”. Hitch has to have a 3.25” hole with 1” material thickness around the hole or a straight clevis bolted or pinned tightly to the drawbar with a minimum of 3.25” hole. Top of hitch adjuster cannot be above center line of axle or hub. Hitches and drawbars must be stationary in all directions. Hitch must be easily accessible (sled operator’s discretion).  
 
5. WEIGHTS: Weights must not extend rearward beyond rear tires and cannot be more than 11 feet from the center of the rear axle to the furthest point forward.  
 
6. TIRES AND RIMS: Maximum tire size – 2500-4500 lbs. maximum tire size up to 15.5x38 or 200 sq. in. on any width rim; 4501-6500 lbs. or up to a 16.9x34 or 229 sq. in. maximum tire size on any width rim; 7000-9500 maximum tire size is 18.4x38 on any width rim. No radial tires. No steel wheels. Two-wheel drive only. No duals.  Top cut tires allowed – no cutting, alterations or changes to the front edge of the tire is allowed.  
 
7. RPM’s: RPM’s allowed will be determined by the NATPA RPM Chart. Any tractor not listed will use manufacturer’s data. A 20% margin of error will be permitted. All tractors to have positive throttle stops with a working governor in the stock location.
   
8. SPEED: Any gear, speed limit is 3 MPH, to be checked by radar. No shifting of TA’s. One beep after flag/cone will result in disqualification. The marker for Div 2T speed will also be used as the mark to stop the tractor if driver wishes to restart pull.  

9. FUEL/ENHANCEMENTS:  Tractors manufactured to use diesel fuel only cannot be converted to gas or LP. Tractors must be naturally aspirated. No turbos or blowers - except Oliver 99GM, etc.  
 
10. CHASSIS/ENGINES:  Tractors must have the stock engine, frames, transmission, rear end and axle housings or manufacturer’s replacement for make and model of tractor being pulled. Stock heads and their replacements are to remain unchanged in outside appearance. Oliver 88/Su88/880 models only are allowed – (7) main blocks; (12) port heads & blocks 1600 – 1800 series. Waukesha 1100/GK series Heads. AC - WC/WD/WD45 can use D-17 engine; IH/Farmall - H, SH, 300, 350; M, SM, SMTA, 400, 450 engines. JD -A/B/G/50/60/70 can use TSC Power Blocks. No M-M 800 or 800 HD heads or blocks allowed. The taller M-M “G” & 605 blocks are allowed on all M-M models. Coop E4 & E5 and Cockshutt 40 & 50 can use Hercules 298, 339, and/or 3400 engines. Dual exhaust not allowed except after stock manifold. Heads that bolt on without modification from the same manufacture with the same length and width and the same number of cylinders is allowed if not stated above.
 
11. ELECTRICAL:  Enhanced electrical systems permitted in all classes. No rev limiters allowed.  
 
12. CARBURETOR & MANIFOLD:  Number of barrels, throats, venturi, etc, must be that of the manufacturer for that make and model of tractor. Exception: John Deere tractors may run are allowed to run updated replacement manifolds permitted. (duplex) heads, manifolds and carburetors. Heisler, Johnson and other after market production (replacement) parts are also allowed that bolt on without modification for that make and model of tractor.
 
13. GIRDLE/DECK PLATES:   No increased height in any tractors (ie: deck plates, shims, girdles) except for stock gasket (see MM “G” 605 blocks in #10).

Division III

Classes: *3250, 3500, 3750, 4000, 4250, 4500, 5000, 5500, 6000, 6500, 7500 and 8500 lbs.

 

1. GENERAL RULES - See general rules that apply to all tractors.

​

2. AGE - Drivers must be 14 years of age or older. Those under 18 years of age must have written parental/guardian permission.

​

3. DRAW BAR - Draw bars must not exceed 20 inches in height or be less than 18 inches from center of axle to hooking point.

​

4. WEIGHTS - Weights must not extend rearward beyond rear tires and cannot be more than 11 feet from the center of the rear axle to the furthest point forward.

​

5. TIRES/RIMS - Maximum tire size - 18.4 X 38; any rim width. Two wheel drive type only. Any cut allowed on tires.

​

6. RPM’s - A maximum of 20% over stock rpm will be permitted. Rpm’s allowed will be determined by the NATPA RPM Chart. Any tractor not listed will use manufacturer’s data.

​

7. SPEED - Any Gear, Speed Limit is 4 MPH. No shifting of TA’s or gears. One beep after flag/cone will result in disqualification. The marker for Div. III speed will also be used as the mark to stop the tractor if driver wishes to restart pull.

12. GIRDLE/DECK PLATE - No increased height in any tractors (deck plates, shims, girdles) except for stock gasket (see M-M “G” & 605 blocks in #10).

TRACTOR WEIGHT CLASSES - Oliver: 44/Su44/440/55Su55/550//66/Su66/660/70 IH/Farmall: H-350 AC: WC-D17 Ford 800, 900 series, Cockshutt 30 and above and like size tractors are not allowed in classes below 3500 lbs. AC: U,UC Massey: 33-333 Oliver: 77-770 JD: A-630 IH/Farmall:10-20, F-20 MM: Z-445 Cockshutt: 40 and like size tractors are not allowed in classes below 4000 lbs. Oliver: 1827-880, IH/Farmall:W&F-30,460/560/ M-450 Massey: 44-444 MM: U-5Star JD: G-730, Case: CC-400 Cockshutt: 50 and like size tractors are not allowed in classes below 4500 lbs.AC: E-A JD: R-830 Massey: 55-555 IH/Farmall: W9-660,WK-40 Case: 500, 600, 900 M-M: GB,GBD,GVI Oliver: 2844-995 and all like size tractors are not allowed below 5000 lbs. 14. * 3250 LBS. CLASS - this division will consist of the following tractors.

 AC: B/C/CA/RC  Case: VAC, 300 series IH/Farmall: F-12/ F-14/A/B/C/SC/200/230/240 JD: B/M/MT/40/50 Oliver: 60/66 Cockshutt: 20/60 Ferguson: TE-20,TO-35 Ford: NAA, 600 series Intercontinental: C-26  Long: A, Massey Harris: 101-JR/Pony/Colt/20/22 M-M: R/335 or any make or model that falls under these series of tractors and or Nebraska Tests HP Rating.

Division III 6 mph

Tractors 1959 and older or production models that started in 1959

Classes: *3250, 3500, 3750, 4000, 4250, 4500, 5000, 5500, 6000, 6500, 7500 and 8500 lbs.

 

1. GENERAL RULES - See general rules that apply to all tractors.

2. AGE - Drivers must be 14 years of age or older. Those under 18 years of age must have written parental/guardian permission.

3. DRAW BAR - Draw bars must not exceed 20 inches in height or be less than 18 inches from center of axle to hooking point.

​

4. WEIGHTS - Weights must not extend rearward beyond rear tires and cannot be more than 11 feet from the center of the rear axle to the furthest point forward.

5. TIRES/RIMS - Maximum tire size - 18.4 X 38; any rim width. Two wheel drive type only. Any cut allowed on tires.

​

6. RPM’s - A maximum of 20% over stock rpm will be permitted. Rpm’s allowed will be determined by the NATPA RPM Chart. Any tractor not listed will use manufacturer’s data.

Division IV

Tractors 1959 and older or production models that started in 1959 Classes: *3250, 3500, 3750, 4000, 4250, 4500, 5000, 5500, 6000, 6500, 7500, & 8500 lbs.

 

  1. GENERAL RULES - See general rules that apply to all tractors.

  2. - AGE: Drivers must be 14 years of age or older. Those under 18 years of age must have written parental/guardian permission.

  3. - SAFETY: All Div. IV tractors will be mandatory equipped with a Dead Man Throttle (Exception: hand clutch equipped tractors). Mandatory High Back Seat. All Div. IV tractors must have fenders. Fenders must be as high as the tallest part of the rear tire and must support the weight of the driver. There will be a 50 pound weight allowance for fenders.

  4. DRAW BAR - Draw bars must not exceed 20 inches in height or be less than 18 inches from center of axle to hooking point. 

  5. - WEIGHTS: Weights must not extend rearward beyond rear tires and cannot be more than 11 feet from the center of the rear axle to the furthest point forward.

  6. - TIRES & RIMS: Maximum tire size - 18.4 X 38; any rim width. Two-wheel drive type only. Any cut allowed on tires.

  7. RPM's: RPM’s - A maximum of 20% over stock rpm will be permitted. Rpm’s allowed will be determined by the NATPA rpm Chart. Any tractor not listed will use manufacturer’s data. A Division IV tractor has a choice of being checked at the end of the track after their pull with a RPM Timing Light by a Tech Official or by a Tattle Tale Memory Tachometer checked by a NATPA Tech Official or Board of Trustees member.

  8. - SPEED: Any Gear, 8 MPH Speed Limit. Shifting of TA’s allowed.

  9. - CHASSIS:Tractors must have the stock engine, frames, transmission, rear end and axle housings or manufacturer’s replacement for make and model of tractor being pulled.  

  10. - MOTOR/ENGINE: Stock heads and their replacements are to remain unchanged in outside appearance. Oliver 88/Su88/880 models only are allowed – (7) main blocks; (12) port heads & blocks 1600 – 1800 series. Waukesha 1100/GK series Heads. AC - WC/WD/WD45 can use D17 engine; IH/Farmall - H, SH, 300, 350; M, SM, SMTA, 400, 450 engines. JD -A/B/G/50/60/70 can use TSC Power Blocks. No M-M 800 or 800 HD heads or blocks allowed. Tractors 1961 and older       Classes: 3500, 3750, 4000, 4500, 5000, 5500, 6000, 6500, 7500, and 8500#
 
  1. GENERAL RULES – See general rules that apply to all tractors.     

 

   2. AGE: Drivers must be 16 years of age or older. Those under 18 years of age must have written parental/guardian permission.  

 

   3. SAFETY: All tractors must have a working safety kill switch. Ladder bars, wide front ends, and use of rev limiters is highly recommend.  All Div V tractors will have a 3/8 inch steel plate  over the flywheel and clutch housing or a an approved scatter safety blanket may be used. Steel flywheels are highly recommended. (This change was mandated by the safety committee on 7/30/03.)

   4. DRAW BAR: Draw bar must not exceed 20 inches in height or be less than 18 inches from center of axle to hooking point. No part of draw bar may extend rearward beyond point of hook. Draw bars must be stationary in all directions. No clevises. Top of hitch adjuster cannot be above center line of axle or hub. (This wording add as per safety committee on 7/30/03) 

  

    5. WEIGHTS: Weights must not extend rearward beyond rear tires and cannot be more than 11 feet from the center of the rear axle to the furthest point forward.

   6. TIRES & RIMS: Tire size maximum 18.4 X 38. Any rim width. No radial tires. No steel lug wheels. Two wheel drive only. No duals. Any cut allowed on tires.  

 
   7. RPM’S: RPM’s allowed will be determined by the NATPA RPM chart.  Any tractor not listed will use manufacturers date.  A maximum of 30% over stock RPM’s will be permitted for each make and model of tractor.  No tractor in Division V will be allowed over 3000 RPM’s.  Specifically, IH 660 will be allowed to run over 2575 RPM’s only if it has the 460-560-660 series agricultural block and head built prior to 1964 and the 660 external planetary axles. Side shields are highly recommended.
Enhanced electrical systems permitted in all classes. Rev limiters are allowed. All tractors must have a positive throttle stop with fully operational governor.  
 
   8. SPEED: 12 mph. Any gear allowed. Shifting of TA’s allowed. The 50’ marker will also be used as the mark to stop the tractor if driver wishes to restart pull. 

 

   9. ENGINE/CHASSIS: Tractors must be naturally aspirated. No turbos or blowers - except two stroke GM diesels. Tractors must have stock frame, transmission, rear ends and axle housing for make and model of tractor being pulled. Front axles must be safe, sturdy and similar to stock with a stock wheel base. Crank cases must bolt to transmission in a stock appearing manner, be of the same manufacturer as the original crank case, must be the same length as the original crank case and be the same number of cylinders as the original make and model of the tractor. Heads, blocks (jugs), manifolds must be of the same manufacturer as the crank case or that of a recognized replacement manufacturer.

    10. CARBURETOR/MANIFOLD:  Any updraft agricultural type carburetor will be allowed. Diesels must have the injection pump in the stock location. Diesel tractors may be converted to gas as long as they use gas heads and comply with all the other Division V rules.

​

    11. GIRDLE/DECK PLATE:  Any integral plates, girdles or reinforcement devices that enhance the engine rigidity and improve safety will be allowed. Deck plates can be no thicker than 1" material; girdles can be no thicker than 1" material; spacer plates can be no thicker than 2" combined.

​

    12. THROTTLE: Tractor must have a dead mans throttle. (Exception to the rule is a tractor factory equipped with a hand clutch).  All tractors must have a positive throttle stop.


    13. GOVERNOR:  Tractor must have a fully functional and operational/working governor. 

​

    14. FENDERS:  All Div. V tractors must have fenders. Fenders must be as high as the tallest part of the rear tire and must support the weight of the driver. There will be a 50 pound weight allowance for fenders.


    15. SEAT:  It is mandatory that the tractor be equipped with a high back seat measuring no less than 7 inches from the base of the seat. (Added as per board meeting of 4/07/17.)
